Dr. Michael Pfeffer serves as the Assistant Vice Chancellor and Chief Information Officer (CIO) for UCLA Health Sciences, which is comprised of the UCLA Hospital System, the UCLA Faculty Practice Group, and the David Geffen School of Medicine.  The UCLA Health Information Technology (IT) organization supports UCLA Health’s mission of delivering leading-edge patient care, research, and education.  Dr. Pfeffer is responsible for the development and operations of the information and telecommunication systems, including CareConnect, UCLA Health’s enterprise-wide electronic health record (EHR), the health IT strategic plan, and the implementation of transformative and innovative technologies while focusing on value. UCLA Health’s unprecedented initial EHR “Big Bang” go-live in March 2013 was the largest of its time. Michael served as the lead physician for this project encompassing over 26,000 users, subsequently becoming the first Chief Medical Informatics Officer for UCLA Health before transitioning into the role of CIO.  Under Dr. Pfeffer’s leadership, UCLA Health IT has achieved numerous industry awards including the HIMSS Analytics Stage 7 inpatient and ambulatory certifications, the Most Wired designation for six-consecutive years, US News & World Report’s Most Connected Hospitals, the Top Masters in Healthcare Administration 30 Most Technologically Advanced Hospitals in the World, and the prestigious HIMSS Davies Award. With the implementation of one of the first ACGME-accredited clinical informatics fellowship programs, he serves as the associate director and is committed to medical student and graduate medical education.  In addition, Dr. Pfeffer continues to practice as an Associate Professor of Medicine and Hospitalist, working with residents and medical students in the care of patients and medical education.  He has lectured worldwide on health IT and regularly lectures at the UCLA Anderson School of Management.  A member of the National HIMSS Physician Committee, Dr. Pfeffer serves as a HIMSS Stage 7 international site surveyor and has published numerous articles on Health IT.  A chemical engineering graduate from Brown University, Dr. Pfeffer received his MD from Cornell University Medical School and completed his residency and chief residency in internal medicine at UCLA.  He is board certified in Internal Medicine and Clinical Informatics.
